AURORA Former Denver Broncos starting strong safety Billy Jenkins is the suspect in a fatal hit and run accident early Thursday morning in Aurora, CBS4's Brian Maass reports.
Jenkins was a starting defensive back for the Broncos in 2000 and 2001 after he was acquired in a trade with the St. Louis Rams, where he played on the Rams' Super Bowl winning team in 1999.
Early Thursday morning, authorities say Jenkins, 34, was driving a rental car when he hit Tracy Gill, 51, near the intersection of Parker Road and East Quincy Avenue. Gill was riding a scooter and died a short time later.
Police say Jenkins ran away into Cherry Creek State Park after the accident but returned to the scene and was arrested.
Jenkins is being charged with vehicular homicide, hit and run, driving under the influence and careless driving. Jenkins was released from jail after posting $50,000 bond.
A message left at Jenkins Arapahoe County home has not been returned.
In addition to starting for the Broncos and Rams, Jenkins also played for the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers. He left professional football after playing for the Bills in 2002.

Wondering if he was still drunk from the night before, (hung over) or had been drinking all the way up to the time of the accident. Either way, he's hosed.
Prayers for the family of Tracy Gill.

What a nice guy to run over some poor guy on a scooter.
Hope he enjoys his new home at the big house.
Hope he gets some extra special attention from the prison staff.
By the way he should make sure he brings soap on a rope.
Hope he is charged with the full extent of the law.

"early Thursday morning" - was the 'scooter' a real vehicle with lights, or one of the 49cc toys that are out and about now. I'm not surprised this accident happened, and expect to see many more of these scooter toys and their riders run down as the season changes and we get darker at dusk and dawn. They are mopeds at best and should keep to the sides of the roads and not be considered vehicles.

Way to defend the criminal, JustSayin. And while you're at it, you should blame the Jamaicans who died in Gustav for living on an island, Goldman and Brown for being home when OJ when psycho, Lennon for not ducking, that guy who's whole family was mowed down downtown last year for bringing his family into a known high-traffic area, etc., etc.
What a bonehead thing to say.

I think you guys misunderstood what Justsayin was just trying to say. No one says that its the Mr. Gills fault. He just pointed out that driving a scooter at that time is not wise. He never even mentioned Mr.Gill's name, nor the name of Billy Jenkins. My prayers with Mr. Gill's families, but I believe Justsayin has a point. Whether drunk or not, i have difficulties with motorcyles/bikes/scooters on the road. I have to be extra careful when manoeuvering because I might just hit them. Of course, if you are drunk, that just makes it worst.
You should really consider what people are saying before bringing out the whip. He, in my opinion, did not put the blame on mr. Gill, rather, he voiced his opinion on the driving of scooters at that time.
Nothing wrong here.

I think maybe you need to get some rest. You seem to be connecting things that have no relation to each other.

Why would one of this stories foundations be that he was a former Bronco. Couldn't it be just a footnote. The individual that was killed, nothing said about being a great father, husband, provider. And, to many comments were negative about him for riding a scooter and couldn't say a kind word for him. :(

Accidents happen for a variety of reasons and 'scooters', how they are equipped or their suitability for the public roads should not be the focus here. The focus of this story (tragic accident) should not be scooters or "former Broncos". The focus should be that yet another person has been killed by someone driving under the influence.
While I do respect the opinions of all posting comment, it's unfortunate there is not more comment on the fact that Jenkins was under the influence as opposed to what Mr. Gill's mode of transportation was.
My prayers and condolences to Mr. Gill's family and friends.
