The Avalanche on Thursday signed Swedish defenseman Daniel Tjarnqvist to a one-year, $750,000 contract.

Tjarnqvist, 31, played for Yaroslavl in Russia last season, posting one goal, two assists and 14 penalty minutes in 18 games.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder previously spent five seasons in the NHL – three with Atlanta and one each with Minnesota and Edmonton. He has 16 goals, 70 assists and 122 penalty minutes in 315 NHL games.

Tjarnqvist, who is from Umea, Sweden, missed most of the 2006-07 season with the Oilers because of a groin injury. He had three goals, 12 assists and 30 penalty minutes that year in 37 games.

“Daniel Tjarnqvist is an experienced defenseman who provides us greater depth on our blue line,” Avalanche general manager Francois Giguere said in a statement.

The Avalanche also signed 6-3, 219-pound left wing Chris Durno, 27, to a minor-league contract.

Durno, a veteran of five minor-league seasons, had 23 goals, 26 assists and 109 penalty minutes in 80 games last season with the San Antonio Rampage in the American Hockey League.

This is just another random signing of a player I've never heard of. I have nothing against Swedish people or players, but does anyone else think the Avs are signing a bunch of Swedes to make Peter Forsberg want to play? (I know his decision to play or not really needs to be based on health).

No, no one else thinks that. Why? Forsberg has played almost his whole carreer with the avs and that without Swedish players.

Nope, its called adding depth. The six should be set already, Liles, Foote, Clark, Salei, Leo, Hannan. Like FG said a vetern guy to fill in in case of injury and if someone needs a day off. Its not like he was signed because he is Swedish, has NHL experience within the division and the Avs are going to be playing quit a bit of youngsters next year and its another spot where they don't have to have a young guy that could be playing in Erie up forthe 7th d-man.
