FREEDOM ISN'T FREE, BUT DOUGHNUTS ARE

Metro-area Krispy Kreme locations are selling red-and-blue frosted original glazed doughnuts, along with star-shaped doughnuts topped with sprinkles, to celebrate the Fourth of July. Buy the patriotic package and yell "I LOVE AMERICA!" and receive another dozen glazed doughnuts - free.

MANY STRIPES, BUT JUST THREE TYPES

The Denver Zoo has a new addition: Elliot, a baby Grevy's zebra. There are three main species of zebra (with some subspecies) found in the wild in Africa:

* Grevy's zebra: The largest species, with narrow stripes that don't meet under the belly. Native to Ethiopia and Kenya. Endangered.

* Plains zebra: Smallest and most numerous species. Distributed throughout eastern Africa. Wide stripes that meet under the belly.

* Mountain zebra: Wider strips than the Grevey's zebra, that also do not meet under the belly. Found in Namibia and South Africa. Endangered.

THE GREEN DOT MEANS GO AHEAD AND HUG

The Rocky Mountain chapter of the Mensa Society is holding its annual gathering at the Sheraton Denver this week. Extra! gleaned this bit of intelligence from the group's Web site: the "hugging code" for the convention: If you want a hug, wear a green dot. If you want the person to ask first, wear a yellow dot. If you prefer your personal space, wear a red dot. Mensans (so the site says) are very respectful of hug dots!
