In his own words

Dave Roever was injured on July 26, 1969, while fighting in Vietnam. He explains in his own words what it was like meeting his wife, Brenda, when he was in the hospital.

"The door opened for our first day to have visitors, and a lady walked in to see the guy beside me. He had third-degree burns over 100 percent of his body. Nobody survives that. She took one look at him and threw her ring on the bed and walked out.

Next thing, I looked up and there's this beautiful teenage girl - my wife - coming toward my bed. Somebody said, 'Here's your husband,' And she said, 'No it's not.'

I'm laying there thinking, 'Yes, I am! I am! I am! For God's sake, please don't leave your ring and walk out!' I had just seen that and I knew it was gonna happen to me.

They showed her my wristband, with my name on it. That's the only way she knew it was me. And you know what she did? She bent down and kissed my face - my face - and she said, 'I want you to know I love you.'

Then she said three words: 'Welcome home, Davey.' And the whole world clapped its hands."
