Stop-Loss

Rated: R, 111 minutes, $34.99, Paramount/MTV

Grade: C+

When Sgt. Brandon King returns from Iraq with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, he's welcomed with a parade - and orders to go back. He's the focus of Stop-Loss, the name for the practice of returning soldiers to the war after they've fulfilled their contracts.

Instead of returning, King (Ryan Phillippe) goes AWOL, taking a road trip with his best friend's girlfriend. Associated Press critic Christy Lemire says the movie "vacillates between earnestness and superficiality, making Stop-Loss too often feel like eye candy with a message," clearly aiming for a youthful audience.

* The Ruins: American college students visiting Mexico run into trouble atop a vine-covered Mayan temple.
