Regional scene: Dorfman wins crown in Junior Match Play

Greenwood Village resident Brian Dorfman won the Colorado Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship, prevailing 2 and 1 in a 36-hole final against Castle Rock golfer Clark Shafer on Friday at Bear Creek Golf Club.

Dorfman, a Cherry Creek High School graduate, clinched the match with a 6-foot par putt on the 17th hole against the Regis High School junior.

PHINNEY THIRD Boulder cyclist Taylor Phinney wrapped up his junior world championship run Friday with a third-place finish in the individual time trial in Cape Town, South Africa, 8 seconds off the winning pace of Michal Kwiatkowski of Poland.

Phinney, who will be competing at the Beijing Olympics, won gold in the 3,000-meter individual pursuit on the track July 12.

Phinney, who entered the race as the defending world champion, recorded a time of 36 minutes, 29.15 seconds over the 26.8-kilometer course.

SKY SOX STUMBLE Peter Ciofrone's eighth-inning RBI single lifted the Portland Beavers to a 6-5 win against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Friday in a Pacific Coast League game in Portland, Ore.

HAMMON HONORED Former Colorado State University athlete Becky Hammon, a guard with the San Antonio Silver Spurs, has been named the Western Conference player of the week by the WNBA.

Hammon averaged 21.7 points, 5.0 assists and 3.7 rebounds in the Silver Stars' wins against New York, Chicago and Atlanta, and it was the fourth time in her career she won the honor.

She set the San Antonio franchise record for free throws made when she went 14-for-15 in an 83-79 victory against the New York Liberty, her former team.

BOWMAN CHOSEN Littleton resident Collin Bowman, a 6-foot-2 defenseman with the Western Hockey League's Kelowna Rockets, has been named to the U.S. Under-18 Select Team that will compete next month at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Breclav, Czech Republic, and in Piestany, Slovakia.

* The Central Hockey League's Colorado Eagles will begin their season Oct. 17 against the Rapid City Rush at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland.

The Eagles will host the CHL All-Star Game on Jan. 14.

QUEISSER HIRED Former Cal athlete Kelley Queisser has been hired as women's lacrosse coach at Fort Lewis College in Durango.

The Skyhawks program is set to play its inaugural season in spring 2009.
