Regional scene: Gallant bound for NLL expansion team

Veteran defenseman John Gallant, a fixture with the Colorado Mammoth since the club moved from Washington, was selected by the Boston Blazers in the National Lacrosse League expansion draft Thursday.
Gallant was selected with Boston's fifth overall pick in the draft. Toronto Rock goaltender Mike Poulin was selected first.
SKY SOX PREVAIL Joe Koshansky drove in four runs and Jayson Nix belted two home runs to help the Colorado Springs Sky Sox win 9-6 against the New Orleans Zephyrs in a Pacific Coast League game at Security Service Field.
CUMMINGS SELECTED Colorado Rapids forward Omar Cummings has been named to the Jamaican national soccer team's roster for Saturday's exhibition match against El Salvador in Frisco, Texas.
Cummings is expected to return to the Rapids for Sunday night's home match against the Columbus Crew at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
BUFFALOES READY The University of Colorado men's basketball team tentatively will open its season Nov. 14 at home against Arkansas Pine Bluff, and the Buffaloes women's basketball team will open Nov. 16 at home against Central Florida.
PIONEERS RANKED The University of Denver athletic program tied for 23rd in NCAA Division I with Wisconsin in SI.com's annual performance rankings for the 2007-08 season, the only Colorado school listed.
BARNES HONORED ThunderRidge High School graduate Mekana Barnes led a group of six former Colorado State athletes chosen for the Mountain West Conference's 10th anniversary team in volleyball.
Barnes was joined by setter Melissa Courtney, outside hitter Courtney Cox-Heil, middle blocker Angela Knopf, outside hitter Tess Rogers (Merino High School) and outside hitter Katie Jo Shirley-Cahoon from CSU.
In other MWC anniversary selections:
* Former CSU runner Bryan Berryhill was named to the men's cross country team with Wyoming's Mark Korir.
* Former CSU runner April Thomas, an Eaglecrest High School graduate, was chosen for the women's cross country team.
* Littleton High School graduate Mercy Adetoye, a former Wyoming athlete, was chosen for the women's soccer team along with Green Mountain High School graduate Aleisha Cramer-Rose, a former Brigham Young athlete.
