REGIONAL SCENE: Legal woes won't derail Lawson's workout

Former North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson still is expected to participate in a scheduled predraft workout in Denver this weekend despite being charged with driving after consuming alcohol in an earlymorning traffic stop in Chapel Hill, N.C., a Nuggets spokesman said Friday.

Lawson also was charged with violating the city's noise ordinance and driving with a suspended or revoked license. He was taken into custody and released and is scheduled to appear in court July 8.

Lawson and Kansas point guard Mario Chalmers are the most notable of the five players scheduled to work out for the Nuggets this weekend.

* Former Nuggets guard Chris Herren was charged with driving under the influence of drugs after Fall River, Mass. Police found him Wednesday slumped over the wheel of his running car, which had crashed into a utility pole.

Herren was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in good condition Friday. He also was charged with possession of a class A drug and reckless operation. Herren played for the Nuggets and Boston Celtics from 1999-2001.

MASTROENI CALLED UP Colorado Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni has been named to the U.S. national soccer team roster for an exhibition match against Argentina on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J.

U.S. forward Landon Donovan, 26, can become the fourth-youngest player in the world to make 100 international appearances.

According to the U.S. Soccer Federation, the only younger players to make 100 appearances were South Korea's Cha Bum-Kun, who was 24 when he reached 100 in 1977, and Saudi Arabia's Sami Al-Jaber and Mohammed Al-Deayea, both of whom were 25 in 1998.

* Denver Barbarians lock John Van der Giessen was named to the U.S. rugby team for the Barclay's Churchill Cup tournament, beginning today in Ottawa.

SKY SOX STUMBLE Adam Morrissey had three hits and three RBI to lead the Salt Lake Bees to an 8-5 win against the host Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Friday in a Pacific Coast League game.

OUTLAWS' TEST The Denver Outlaws find first place on the line Saturday night in Major League Lacrosse's Western Conference.

The Outlaws (2-1) face the conference co-leading Los Angeles Riptide (2-1) at 7:30 MDT in Carson, Calif.

Earlier this season, the Outlaws beat the Riptide 22-12 at Invesco Field at Mile High.

"Winning this game would give us the season series against them," Outlaws coach and general manager Brian

Reese said.

RAGE DEAL Rocky Mountain Rage coach Tracy Egeland received a multiyear contract extension from the Broomfield- based Central Hockey League club, and he will add the duties of general manager next season.

Egeland engineered a 37-point improvement in the standings for the Rage last season from its inaugural one the year before. The Rage finished 36-22-6 last season.

CUSICK HONORED Colorado State senior third baseman Lauren Cusick has been named to the Easton All-America second team in softball.

Cusick led the Rams in batting average (.393), home runs (20) and RBI (42).

* Northern Colorado first baseman Chad Murray and utility player Kevin Sandberg were named to the All-Division I Independent first team in baseball.

* Keenesburg resident Wyatt Johnson, a Northeastern Junior College steer wrestler, will compete June 14-22 in the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper.
